Estuaries and Coastal

inter-tidal mudflatsThe Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study process needs to address many aspects of the estuary or coastal system performance, from “typical” to “extreme” conditions.

One essential study in such a dynamic environment focuses on the response of mobile sediments to the introduction of engineering structures.  The effects of the structures and their temporary-works (those temporary constructions used to assist in the installation of the main structure) need to be assessed.

Suitably calibrated and validated using appropriate field data relating to the sediment and flow field, CFD can provide a useful method for options testing for various proposed scenarios.

The optimum scenario which will cause the minimum impact on the local marine environment can then be selected or investigated further.
